Database Modeling & Design

Our database modeling and design methodology is soundly based on semantic data modeling and object orientated design. We have continuously improved our methodology over the past 20+ years. Originally we built our own database design environment suite of tools to support our methodology. Now we adopt the leading 3rd party database design tools.

Our methodology includes:

  • Database needs analysis
  • Conceptual database model
  • Physical database model
  • Data distribution model (for distributed environments)
  • Data conversion/data population processes
  • Database operations & maintenance (tuning, caching, data marshalling recommendations)
  • Database schema evolution processes

We adopt our database design and implementation methodology when helping with a GIS database design to include the modeling of the implicit relationships that are well managed by GIS technology - such as topology with a cadastre layer or a linear network with a utility or cable network - as well as the value based explicit relationships. We take a pragmatic approach and use our client's GIS toolset to do our physical database modeling so they can easily generate their data conversion, data migration and production GIS databases.

Our staff has both the management and GIS tool experience to help our clients with new data conversion efforts and well as upgrading or migrating their existing GIS databases to newer versions or different vendors. We've been helping clients populate, upgrade, migrate and maintain their ESRI, Intergraph, GE (Smallworld) and AutoDesk GIS databases since 1986.
